
Vocalist Donghoon Kang, a bass-baritone from South Korea, is renowned for the deep resonance of his warm voice as well as his thoughtful approach to interpretation. Mr. Kang, currently based in New York City, has won prizes in major competitions such as Washington National Competition, Opera Index Competition, and in the Opera Division of the Gerda Lissner International Voice Competition.

This season, Mr. Kang will perform the role of 'Angelotti' in Puccini’s 'Tosca' under the baton of Joseph Colaneri at the Glimmerglass Festival. He will also cover the role of 'Papa Cordero' in the world premiere of 'The House on Mango Street' by Derek Bermel. He recently performed in a concert with the MSM Orchestra conducted by George Manahan, as a winner of the Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition. Mr. Kang has also performed the role of 'Capulet' in Gounod’s 'Roméo et Juliette', conducted by Pierre Vallet; 'Vodník' in DvoÅ™ák’s 'Rusalka', conducted by Kelly Kuo, both at the Manhattan School of Music; and 'Dulcamara' in Donizetti’s 'L’elisir d’amore', produced by the Hansol Group. He made his debut at the Sejong Art Center in Korea, appearing in the Annual Gala Concert presented by Seoul Opera.
In 2023-2024 season, Mr. Kang made his debut as the role of ‘Leporello’ in Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ as a fellow artist of Merola Opera Program. He was praised by San Francisco Classical Voice for "Singing Gorgeously; funny and charmingly sheepish and did terrific job imitating Son(Don Giovanni)'s voice". He performed operatic scenes for Merola Grand Finale where he made his debut in War Memorial Hall of San Francisco Opera. He also made his debut as the role of 'Der Tod' from Ullmann's opera 'Der Kaiser von Atlantis', and ‘Theseus’ from Britten's opera ‘The Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at Manhattan School of Music. He also performed scenes of ‘Thaïs’ as ‘Athanaël’ by Massenet, and the scenes of ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’ as ‘Figaro’ by Mozart.

Mr. Kang has performed a wide array of operatic roles, including ‘Herr Reich’ in the opera ‘Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor’ by Otto Nicolai in his debut at Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater, ‘Nicandro’ from the opera 'Atalanta’ by Händel, and ‘Nereid’, ‘Priest’, and ‘Bass Soloist’ in Purcell’s ‘King Arthur’. A versatile performer, Mr. Kang has also been celebrated for his elegant delivery of art songs. In 2022, he was selected as a fellow-artist of Ravinia Steans Music Festival and was featured in performances including ‘Singers Concert’, and ‘A Curated Feast of Art Songs’. Mr. Kang also debuted in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, performing a program of Russian and Korean Art songs in the same year.
Mr. Kang's expansive reach as a vocalist has included his work as a member of the classical vocal group U Angel Voice, with whom he has performed at major venues around the world including Seoul Arts Center, Seong-nam Art Center, and Los Angeles's Walt Disney Hall. He has also been a featured artist in numerous commemorative national performances and military events in his native South Korea, where he also appeared as a contestant and semifinalist in the wildly popular 'Phantom Singer' music competition broadcast on national television by JTBC.
Mr. Kang completed his Bachelor’s degree cum laude at Seoul National University, Master’s degree at the Juilliard School, and Professional Performance Diploma at Manhattan School of Music having been awarded full scholarships from every institutions.
